Beginnings

A Chapter by Geoff Waugh

I’d like to tell you that everything here is amazing, that the people are amazing, and the culture is amazing, but if I did, I would be lying. Around twenty years ago there was an incident, the public of course have no idea what is happening, and they just believe what they are told. The only problem is, it isn’t us telling them what to think anymore.

We are the last known survivors of the Edonian Party, a political party set up over two hundred years ago, to have absolute control over the environmental issues of global warming. We were granted power in the final meeting of the EU, well what was left of it after France was destroyed, and Germany and Russia fought with America over the remaining land masses, It was us that designed the plans for this Megacity, we were the ones who saw to its completion and to its habitation, as the temperature outside rose, it was our scientists who developed the barrier technology to shield the city from the radiation from the sun. It was our authority to create governing councils, and therefore we were regarded by many as keepers of precepts, it was also our arrogance that resulted in our downfall. Twenty years ago, our chairmen decided to remove the town based council system they had placed and divide the city into three regions instead, this however didn’t go down well with the councils as most council men would not be needed any more, and the governing council in each region would be decided once again by our chairmen. That’s when it started, at first there were accidents, a few car crashes and maybe a fire or two, we didn’t really think to much into it.
After a while though we noticed that it was low level party members, the sort of “your local Edonian party spokesman” type of people, who were dying in these accidents, so we monitored it, and through the police force we were able to establish a force that were acting independently of the council to ensure that we would halt plans to amalgamate the territories, what we didn’t know though was how far this force was prepared to go to stop the merge.

The years went by and we were able to keep this faction in check, limiting their finances through our chairmen, and out connections, but it was getting harder to maintain the façade of power, when our high ranking party members began to get murdered in similar accidents. At this point we were desperate for a solution, so we issued a propaganda campaign stating anyone found to be harboring, or supporting the faction would be put through the judicial system. This spawned a response that we didn’t want; the faction for the first time in ten years took a voice, a spokes-person. And through our broadcast systems their first official message to us was delivered. Step down or be killed. We were of course as defiant as always and retaliated with our own message, announcing that we were a crucial part to the survival of the Megacity and if we were to step down, the city would not function…I wish we just stepped down.

The public had been alerted to possible terrorist activities, and they were scared, the streets were full of rioters, there were stores looted, and governmental buildings destroyed. Yet for some reason the faction remained quiet whilst all of this was happening. We soon realized why, as with all of our powers focused on stopping the rioters, we neglected the fact that this faction was a real threat, they used this fact against us. Our chairmen were the next targets, and in one fell swoop our wisest were gone, simply disappeared. The only thing that told us they had been assassinated was the blood stains on the table.

That’s when we relinquished our rights, and the rioters celebrated their great victory, that they had taken down a party, and stopped terrorist activities single handed. Fortunately a new party stepped up to take the reins the magus Party. They promised peace and prosperity, and they delivered. The Edonian party went about living their normal lives, as people had no idea who the majority of the members were, the one thing we prided ourselves on was our anonymity. But the killings kept on, one by one our members simply disappeared, and we were forced to go into hiding, using our few remaining contacts to generate new identities. We then moved to the under city, in a final bid to keep ourselves safe. For a while the killings stopped, but only because we disappeared.

I’d like to tell you that everything here is amazing, that the people are amazing, and the culture is amazing, but if I did, I would be lying.
