9 Short Poems for One GirlA Poem by Anthony JI. I’ve built my heart like Los Angeles and still it sprawls out edgelessly. I fear the gridlocked way it bustles for you. II. I would forgo a view of mountains (even the serried kind with waterfalls) just to stand next to you like mountains. III. The meteorologist in my soul left for Seoul some time ago. Now his instruments lay cluttered & might whisper in an alien tongue: “we are for each other.” IV. Forgive me for these slender arms which reach so tactless toward your smile as rosevines to the sun. V. And of course my own lips are fresh layers of krazy glue, so if you ever kiss me in the sunlight make it open-eyed and frenzied at five o'clock on a workday. VI. One bright spring morning we’ll both be cadavers and grad students will decode these old computers in our heads. A lab-hand will tersely skim the remnants of those pretty verses i never sang for you and he will perhaps smile. VII. Our faces are pink tissue paper wrapped around the shifting vapors in our heads. it is in this deep fog that I would like a lot to meet you. VIII. I will reduce my passion to the most impactful metaphors and rejoice in the fact that they are not enough. IX. If your eyes echoed mine I would stop writing because writing is for when you don’t have everything.
