Something for the Pain

Something for the Pain

A Poem by Josh

he had a splitting headache today
he had forgotten his glasses
he took two tylenol pills
something for the pain

he got dumped today
his girlfriend ended it
she had cheated on him
he paid for a prostitute that night
something for the pain

he got fired from work today
his productivity was too low
his mind nowhere near his work
he drank a bottle of wine
something for the pain

he crashed his car today
he was speeding and lost control
he was put in the hospital
they gave him morphine
something for the pain

he was released from the hospital today
no one had come to visit him
he was prescribed vicadin, he took two
something for the pain

he was diagnosed with depression today
he spoke with a therapist
he was put on antidepressants
something for the pain

he lost his mind today
in a hole of depression
he got a coiled rope
and with a firm knot he hung
something for the pain

I feel odd calling this a lovely poem, but that it is, very rich and a wonderful examination of how delicate us human beings are. One bad sequence of events can cause us to search for 'something for the paint'. A deep and dark poem, very much one of my favorites.

I especially love how it increases in darkness and shows the human reliance on instead of facing the problem directly or trying to work for it we're always running for "something for the pain".
