What Comforts UsA Poem by Annette Jay SweeneyWhen you notice a girl’s bra-straps showing instead of hidden do you want to sink your gentle teeth into them? As she stands by the mirror hoisting her hair with Axe gel do you want to create a billboard-blanket out of it to wrap up in? A liquid sticks in pieces, paper maché, across the vast expanse of a forearm, begging for you to taste mints that will quench your thirst. To buy an stuffed imitation of a young sea turtle and wrap it in sweat made for two would give them the wrong idea…because it’s something to cuddle. Wearing socks with sandals is not as bad as showing your ankles when she is aching to test how you walk on water. Who decides what is normal, what is a tack that holds up a sign of Different. Not custom. Who decides what you should want to dip your fingers into on a December night in the land of a thousand lakes. © 2012 Annette Jay SweeneyAuthor's Note
