Millenials?A Poem by Annette Jay SweeneyThe ponderings of an office-supply cashier...Our generation’s landfill may at first appear to be an ode to Wendy, the King, and Mc’y D. On closer inspection there’s far more hidden underneath this layer of grease trap wrappers. You will find chip after electronic chip, cords aplenty, head stone monitors, and an endless supply of currents devoid of any battery life. We have been taught with a subtle hand to want entirely new set ups, trashing decent, if not fixable computers and printers with ease. We need touch-screen, blu-tooth, maybe next year 3D TVs. It’s not just us being trained in what we “think” we need. Corps. tout their “earth-friendly” products, which just happen to be cheaper in price and quality. Instead of buying replacement parts, we are encouraged to buy shiny, untouched. Power chords to laptops cost 1/3 the price of a fresh computer, ink costs more than a printer still in the box, and scanners are rarely sold alone, even though an all-in-one isn’t necessary. Our Good Wills and D.I.s have bellies full of plastic. Gaming systems with broken controllers dot shelves like black heads hiding underneath your skin. We have become a graveyard for electronics, only wanting more, more, more! Ever seen Wall-E? Those piles of used up robotics may seem funny to the untrained eye... © 2010 Annette Jay SweeneyAuthor's Note
