Paying for Moral CrimesA Poem by Annette Jay SweeneyTripping past the boundaries...God knows we’ve all experienced it. No matter how sky high and spic-span clean your morals may be, we all overstep boundaries. You may have felt similar things before. It’s like when you have cancer, but can’t tell anyone. One part of you imagines the sunshine bliss of not having the knowing, while you wonder how much more hurt they will be. I would describe it kind of like that instant the first time you ride a roller coaster, right when you’re about to reach the top of that first hill-click click click. Something comes over you, you want to scream like a little kid, beg them to turn it off and go back, even though you know it’s too late. -like pageant girls must feel the moment after giving a horrid, dumb, or plain answer. It means crushing defeat. If only they had just done/said the right thing, the blow would have been lessened. Today I committed a moral crime, though not too serious or high. Yet feeling the nauseated fear building ulcers in my stomach, G(you)IlT, may be enough punishment alone to bear. © 2010 Annette Jay SweeneyAuthor's Note
