Your hungry eyes pass
over letter after
letter, word after word,
devouring piece
after piece to
satisfy the brain.
Your tongue licks at
the icing of
sugar coated metaphors.
Sweetness exuded,
covering taste buds
in thick sticky
delicacies for the mind.
A banquet laid
out, you feed on me.
Love this from the concept to the execution. It's the sort of poem I can happily read over again and again - it feeds me!
The only thing that jars for me is the title. ‘Intellectual’ suggests logical/civilized/restrained/considered – it is more a refined nibbling whereas what you describe here is gorging uncontrollably.
To me, this poem describes the way one might read a love letter – It is the reading and rereading of their letters with a desperate yearning to have them near, not the consumption of an academic (however interesting) textbook.
I do love the poem itself though which just oozes skill.
Hmmm, 2nd poem of yours I read, 2nd time I land lucky! The title of this one put its arm around my shoulder, smiled at me and said 'You know want to read me, don't you?' How could I refuse?
I really enjoyed this. Your style is spare, i like it, no words wasted. You take an idea and work it home with minimal fuss. Also there is no sentimentality or ego about the poem, which is self-confident and does not put a syllable wrong.
What I like is that the idea is everything and you do not ponce around with fancy words trying to be all pretty pretty. The idea is all! Munch, chomp, slurp. Ahhhhhh! Looks round for another bite.
Interesting metaphors used well, reading flows nicely. The last four words "you feed on me" seem a bit out of the mode or feeling with the rest of the delectable descriptions. The poem is a delightful way of describing the pleasure the we all get reading a good writing.
