A Poem by Anja Berestetska
"

This poem is about sometimes difficult relationship of two women: the mother and the beloved one

"

Your mother looks at me carefully,

Pours me tea, asks me vividly.

I know now where is coming from

That light in your eyes .

Evening is melting into the garden

Of a house that still remembers

Your first steps,

You putting a carrot

For a snowman in winter,

You climbing the peach tree

Full of fruits to nibble,

You playing hide and sick

With your siblings

In her mouth wrinkles

Hides your smile,

We sit in the dark for a while

Silent.

I know she probably doesn’t like me:

A new intruder into this house,

That saw too many coming and going

Into her beloved son’s life

With laughs and troubles.

And now one more

Trying to please her

She feels what every mother does

And every sister.

Only they know the

Fountainhead of sensitivity

And tenderness

That you hide from the world

And I’m yet to discover

Which sometimes shines out

When you think I’m not watching,

I don’t blame her

Pretty sure I’ll be feeling same way

Watching our future son

Kissing his girlfriend goodbye

At doorways.

We remain silent,

Now and then changing

Casual phrases about

The dinner and weather.

I don’t know how to tell her,

I wish she would know

How thankful am I

For her boy

That waits for me in the room upstairs.

I can really understand the tension of the relationship between potential mother in law and daughter in law, particularly if you are sharing her home. You conveyed that well. Yes, his mother and also if he has sisters will have the experience of years of getting to know every bit about him. His moods, his funny little ways. That in time will change for you and maybe you won't feel threatened by it ( threatened might be a bit too harsh here). Once that grandson arrives, I think there will be a melting of frost for sure. Maybe you need to pluck up the courage and tell her what a wonderful job she did on being a mum to your beloved. If that doesn't do the trick I don't know what will.

an edit; hide and seek.

I enjoyed your lines, your poem is composed well and the three stanzas lead into each other nicely.

It took quite a few years for my mum in law to get on with me, but eventually, we became very good friends, and did love each other.
