By the sea...A Poem by anirudh_Pthe seaside laced with the memory of someone.By The Sea… I
head read my sermons, and outside I gazed. A
busy fish market that faded in the city walls. Most
sold fishes in their stalls, Some
quarrelled over their unsettled business. Sea
gulls perched on the coconut trees, Their
occasional cries and an empty fishing net. The
fishes had their day, birds their nests. People
were in a hurry, they moved on. Soon,
the market place was empty, apart From
a fish or two on cobblestone steps, Already
dead, shivering and deserted. The
sun was silent and peaceful. When
it dived into the sea, it left behind An
inferno blazing in the sky, it lasted Through
the dusk, till the twilight. Over
the city walls, the lamps were lit. And
a bell ringing in the Shiva temple. Outside, the beggars
counted their alms. Where I stood was the
union of this great, Myriad city and the
majestic grey sea, Two different worlds,
yet in harmony. The sea was climbing
on the shore, With every retreat ,
promised a greater forece. Every now a wave would
jump higher, And another would
break into a foamy residue. A lighthouse distant
in the sea, it flashed A spec of light one
would surely miss. Two lovers walked
along the shore, Prodded on coconut
shells, torn nets And leaves brought
back by the sea. It got dark, the city
slept, the sea darker still. It had climbed over
the cobblestone steps, Washed away the dead
fish, too late. The starry sky, and
the cool breeze soothed, The waves got calm, my
soul nostalgic. Evoked a memory,
vague, yet latched to it, A feeling, chaste, in
remembrance of a soul. That soul, an
unfathomable deep, mystic. Mystic because he left
only this one, Just this one memory
by the sea… That day, the world,
for me, stood Without dimension,
empty as a coconut shell. The mind did saunter
beyond the horizon, Yet my soul, it wished
to stay back, Coled in the
confinement of this chassis. I was torn apart,
without identity. A mind, a body, a
soul, The sea, the dead
fish, the broken wave.
