400+ years of oppression

holiday?
400+ years of oppression
cannot and must not
be ignored
swept under the rug

the wrongs of
our forefathers
of white christian
wealthy men must not
be ignored

the weights of slavery
the evils of reconstruction
the encouraged racism
blatant and flagrant
segregation

voices unheard
voting rights non-existent
a lack of protections
civil rights denied
economic limitations
lack of education

400+ years of oppression
is not fixed
with a national holiday
celebrating juneteenth

as a nation
we have failed our own
yes virginia
black lives matter
african slaves built this country

everything we have
past and present
was built
on foundation set
with the blood
of slaves
with the beatings
with the rapes
with the murders
of owned peoples

of owned people

we are a sick people
we are a sick nation
we are a racist nation
we are guilty

an extra day off
does nothing
to fix this grave error
we have failed our own
we are destined to carry
the weight of our forefathers
and present-day racism

400+years of oppression
is not fixed with a holiday
