Prologue

Prologue

A Chapter by Angie Mathai

It was in the times of constant war. Blood kept spilling everywhere and there was poverty. There were wars, crusades and peasant revolts. The world was in chaos. Europe was settled but it was not at peace. There was war everywhere.

The countryside was more peaceful than the towns. Trade flourished, peasants were peaceful. New religions and beliefs were formed. Civilization moved towards modernism. The kings came after the other, times changed. Legends were considered to be myths, and myths disappeared.

People's thoughts were towards modernism and they thought their ancestors' ways of living were barbaric. Some were considered myths. Here and there, someone would encounter people with special ability or an extra sense towards life. They were considered dangerous and evil. They were hunted down and killed.

Violence was poured into the heart of men and every man was filled with malice, jealousy and injustice. They became selfish and arrogant. They hurt the other just to see them in pain. Killing people in stakes became a common punishment. Cruelty ran in their vein and they were proud about it.

Even punishments were different for the rich and the poor. Men with high birth but have gone low have had their throats sliced or were hanged in galleys while the poor suffered more painful deaths. They were robbed; and were stabbed and thrown into the forest for the beasts to prey on. Few were saved mercifully by the 'people of the forest' while others waited miserably for their fate.

The saved one's returned to their families but they were considered as 'living dead' People believed that their dead turned into the living dead, a few nights after the death if the corpse was preyed on by the 'people of the 'forest'. So, they dug open the grave of the dead on the third night to see if the corpse has been attacked or not and spill some garlic over them.

If they found the corpse missing, there would be chaos and disappearances. People with special talent 'saw' and predicted things. They were considered evil and we're untouchable. There was howling heard on every full moon.

People thought they were becoming mad. Some would say they met 'an angel of the forest' and that they would be meeting again. They would disappear and never came back. The war was going on. Death was on its toll with war on a side, poverty on the other and the disappearances on the other.

When all these news reached the ears of the ill-fated king, he did not heed. He was so immersed in himself. He was absorbed in his fame and glory and his women. He did not care of the concern of his subjects. His merriment was in his women and gold and his wine.

Little did he know that his 'no-nonsense' wife could 'see and predict' the future. She saw her husband's irresponsibility and knew what would happen. So the brave woman hardened her heart and called her little girl, dressed her like a shabby-stable girl seated her in a mare, and sent her to the forest.

As the queen had predicted, the king fell into his enemy's hands was tortured and burned alive while his brave queen was raped and was burned at stake for her extra sense. The once flourished country was now on fire and ruins and was full of death and blood.

The little girl went deep into the forest and fell into deep slumber out of exhaustion. The next thing she knew was that she was being carried away by a group of people dressed in leaves and skin and was more barbaric. She fought with all her strength but she was no match for them.

The leader of the cult, an elder woman saw the girl's power and knew that she will be very powerful one day. So the old woman named her Amicia and everyone called her Amice.

Soon Amice won over the hearts of everyone with her talent and was wise. Amice excelled in all the special abilities the old woman taught and she was experienced herself.

Years passed, on her death bed, the old woman called Amice and blessed her with all gifts and gave a hard and brave fighter named Savaric to be Amice's husband. The old woman also gave her own bronze wand to Amice. Amice held the wand as a treasure, dear to her life.

The old woman died happy and full of life.

While Amice grieved over the loss of her mentor, Savaric comforted his wife. He was a brave man, fierce fighter and a faithful husband. He did not have any complaints over Amice's dressing as she always wore a tunic and a belt at her waist with a dagger and adorned her long raven hair with wild flowers and leaves.

People who have heard of her called her a sorceress but her people called her an angel who has come to save them. Rumors broke out throughout the country about this so called sorceress but Amice and Savaric had learned to live in secrecy.

When it was time for her to come out of hiding, Amice called her beloved daughter and gave her a beautiful locket made of gold and the learned from her brothers. She excelled in archery just like her mother and was the younger image of Amice.

But, Amice knew perfectly well that her time to come out from her hiding and take what was rightfully hers, (her kingdom) was near. While Amice and Savaric plotted and planned the revolt, Idonea learned to use a sword from her brother's.

When it was time for her to come out of hiding, Amice called her beloved daughter, and gave a beautiful locket made of gold to her and then called her trusted and faithful protector Nigel, a fierce young man and a brave fighter a few years older than Idonea.

She gave them to each other to be husband and wife with the presence of Savaric and her sons, and told them that if they did not return before dawn, they are to run towards the west to the sea and take a ship to a far away land and advice the cult to go in all directions until it was time for them to come and join together.

Idonea had a tearful separation from her family but Nigel comforted his wife. Knowing her, he didn't need to comfort for long but strangely enough, Idonea welcomed his comfort and she found peace.

Idonea silently called upon the gods as the future was closed upon her. It was just after midnight, Idonea called the members of the cult out of instinct and advised them to go in all directions on the earth and that heavens would send them a sign as to when to return back.

The members did not like it and revolted against Idonea and a shooting star fell near them. They took it as a sign from heaven and what Idonea said was what the gods wanted. So went to gather their family and started packing.

Just as Idonea was making sure that everyone had left the cult and none was left out, a very wounded Ymbert came hurriedly to his sister and told her and his new brother-in-law law about the fate of his parents and brothers at the stake and that he was being followed and urged Idonea to hurry and flee to the sea.

But Idonea did not heed him but attended to his wounds and helped him into her own horse and took the locket which her mother gave, muttered something in a foreign language and shouted aloud

“Lo heavens, listen to me. I, Idonea daughter of the Brave Amicia and the fierce Savaric speak to you directly. You have given me a great misery. You have clouded my eyes. You took away the brave woman the world ever knew and here, I her daughter stand with a great wrath upon all the men of evil. I, Idonea the Valiant have sent a curse on this locket of mine given by my mother Amice herself. Let this moment be known forever, that whoever touches this locket shall die a slow and painful death but only a true heir of Amice, the brave and Idonea, the Valiant shall touch this and find glory and power and destroy the wicked. No lo, I flee to the sea to obey my mother's command but only the true heir of my blood shall open the case on my locket and it shall be hidden"

With that, she cut her finger and dropped a drop of her blood and covered the locket carefully in a piece of cloth and threw it towards the forest as far as possible. But she did not dare to see in which direction her locket had fallen, and fled to the sea towards a faraway land with her husband Nigel and her wounded brother Ymbert.

The fame of Amice and the locket of Idonea were completely forgotten but were believed to be a myth, until the locket of Idonea fell upon the hands of nineteen years old American girl named Amy Winestone, while she was touring in France with her mother.

She found the locket near a forest where she had been hiking accidentally.  Amy was considered a freak as she can 'sees' things like future, and 'hear' people's thoughts which earned her no friends. Her romance history was zero. Her parents thought that she was going crazy and sent her to a rehabilitation facility, but it was of no use.

Her only solace was the locket itself and it strangely felt like home. She would talk to the locket and she would see things that happened at a different time. Like, a woman throwing that locket. Little did Amy know that who she saw in her vision was the valiant princess Idonea herself and the locket was no ordinary locket.

Back in the fae world, Idonea knew that the time for the cult to rejoin is near and she went on to spread to news to all people of her kind in the fae world, and could pass on to the human world when called by Amy herself as Idonea was no more a human but a fairy on death.
