Night Walk

Night Walk

A Respite Away From Reality

Night Walk

I walk alone through the darkening woods and
Hear the receding call of the whippoorwill
As he journeys to destinations unknown to me.
As I walk, I ponder the awakening of night creatures
As they make ready to make their nocturnal sojourns
Into the underbrush, which is now in darkness.
It's a twilight world now where fireflies are
Flirting with the grass tops, sipping dewdrops.
Nearby, an owl calls out, 'who..who.'
And I think, ' indeed...who?'
My path is growing darker and my steps quicken
As I make my way toward the edge of the woods.
Here is a nether land rarely seen by man.
As I stand in the darkness looking toward the light
It reminds me of going toward the light
At the end of the tunnel.
It signifies my state of mind right now...
As I walk toward the setting sun
Grateful for this respite away from daily life...
I silently wonder as the sun descends
If I will need to walk this way again.
