My life is mapped out on my soul like a tattoo

absolutely loved this tattoo.

Like a tattoo on flesh,
my life is mapped out on my soul.

Who is this girl?
Who is this version of myself that I have not known before?

Why do I question?
Why do I wonder?
Is it not what I was created to do?

In my mind are passing reflections of who I used to be.

Who is this girl?
I do not know her.

Do I like her?
Do I not like her?

Why do I question?
Why do I ponder?
Is it not what I was created to do?

An interesting psychological piece here. The people we were at earlier stages of life remain within us but seem as strangers to our current selves. Yet we do have access to them if we are willing to take the trouble. If we do so, we must remember to withhold judgement. They knew only their present realities and acted accordingly. Neither should our future selves look down on us for our actions, which are made with the knowledge available to us now.

Your title blew me away. The kind of line I read over & over as the different possibilities filter thru my mind. Life does change us . . . distorts us . . . makes us into people we can barely recognize anymore. I love how your poem stays in the realm of questioning, not trying to provide answers, which implies (to me): Life is what it turns out to be! And it's all there in the tattoo! I agree, we are not supposed to map it all out...we are supposed to just live it...do it, feel it....
when life is too tightly fit into a mold...we become stagnant and live for others rather than ourselves.
