Peace of Mind

Peace of Mind

A Story by Juliet Forshaw

Today is unlike tomorrow,
tomorrow unlike yesterday.
Change is the one thing
which remains constant in
our unstable lives.

It was a wet, dull morning. I sat about reading my newspaper,
listening to the the blackbirds as they sang their early morning
blues. The rain fell slovenly in dribs and drabs forcing the
occasional tremble of an Oak leaf outside my front window.
The white clouds gathered, forming structures here and there
but overall seemed patternless in the grey sky. I stood up and
wandered about. I did not know where I was going, nor did I
want to finish my breakfast, I was lovestruck. I often found
myself as a child gazing up into the sky, open mouthed
wondering why certain clouds took certain formations or why
some of them changed shape while it seemed others did not.
Sometimes I would get caught doing this and my Grandmother
would say, "if the wind changes, you'll stick like it."
Throughout our lifetime we strive to find stability, today is
unlike tomorrow, tomorrow unlike yesterday, change is the
one thing which remains constant in our unstable lives.
This concept leaves me with butterflies in my stomach, yet at
the same time a strange kind of peace of mind.
