Sweater

Sweater

A Poem by AJ Douglas

For as long as I can remember

life has been like an itchy sweater

I can’t wait to take off

a frumpy and unflattering dress

shoes with holes in the soles

allowing tiny pebbles in

that feel like boulders under my feet

trousers that are too tight

painfully pinching my waist and hips

There have been a few fleeting moments

over the years I thought perhaps

I’d finally found the right fit

only for it all to unravel

like a knitted scarf snagged on a rusty nail

I wouldn’t expect a careful dresser

such as yourself with a wardrobe

full of fancy suits constructed

of the costliest most comfortable fabric

tailored to your exact measurements

to comprehend a word of this
