Ordinary People

"I've never done that, I've never been there,"

I would repeat countless times in response 

to your stories of the many places you've 

been and all you've experienced though 

you're nearly five years younger than me 

that I know I will never have the opportunity 

to see or do, unable to relate to your life 

if we were ever to engage in an actual 

conversation chatting over drinks like 

ordinary people while seated in a booth 

of a bar that looks no different than it did 

in 1962 located in an insignificant small town 

the world has forgotten about where no one 

recognizes you or knows your name 

because they're too busy surviving to care

Surviving? or living?
There is a difference.

This is so very real, though. Most of us do well just to survive in this cold World.

This is kind of haunting, in a way.
There is an underlying feeling of shame and regret hidden under these lines. There is also frustration at oneself, the state of the World, and with small town life, as well, which I totally get.
I totally understand all of it. I'm from one of those places. I managed to get out, but it seemed to cost me way more than it should have.
