Invitation

Invitation

A Poem by AJ Douglas

I don't fear death as so many do

I've sent him embossed invitations

bordered in black and handwritten

in conscientious calligraphy

bought the best wine I could afford

cooked a candlelight dinner for two

lowered the lights anticipating

his arrival like an anxious lover

awaiting a knock upon my door

only to end up spending the evening

alone sulking in disconsolate silence

I would never dare to make demands

on him as I'm sure he has more

pressing matters to attend to

or maybe he plans to surprise me
