a day outA Poem by andy groeamidst the weather and wine we drove. the rain hit the windows, blurring the landscape and muffling the conversation. but we didn't mind. our hands met, cold at first with nil-forgotten eagerness, but soon found warmth in their gentle dance. we ducked outside, hands still grasped, and breathed in the wet autumn day. blustery wind pulled at our hair and ears as we hid beneath the covered bridge. rushing water spilled and churned over the way, attempting to engulf its imprisoned trees and turning back upon itself. a single grey heron stood in the shallows, tall and statuesque. back inside as we ventured on. despite the chill, we ate ice cream at an old drug store diner, laughing and smiling to the past yearbook photographs. again we embarked to a bridge, both covered and old. we climbed up among its wooden arms and captured the day. but soon our day was closing, and we had to venture home, palms still crossed, warm, loving, and wishing for another day. © 2011 andy groe |
