beach, nighttimeA Poem by andy groeas another day surrenders and night begins to grow, i stand quietly on the shore looking out toward the restless sea, allowing the water to slowly creep up and kiss my worried toes. i watch the waves roll and break, shimmering in the pure moon light. i welcome the cool wind that blows gently across the sand and through my sunbaked hair, its salty taste filling my every breath. a single boat far out at sea crawls along the fading horizon and a distant lighthouse sends itself turning across the night. soon the reaching water has climbed around me, swallowing my feet, only to fall back down to the changing tide. before i'm there too long i realize it's not my place to stay. but i wait for a moment more. i close my eyes, and take it all in one last time. at last, though, i turn and walk away over the rippled sand, with my back against the darkened sea. © 2010 andy groeReviews
