Awaking DreamsA Poem by Matt DeFrancoAnd I’ve wondered all along If my dreams were merely dreams If I could have been a part of… That I should have been there That the one’s I’ve meant to embrace, have laughed and cried will live and die with me.
Will I strive to salvage? Combat pity and regret? Stare fate in the eyes And proclaim “Not just yet”
That there is no such defeat within me.. That giving up doesn’t lace my genes.
And inward I multiply Forsaking regret Leaving nothing behind
This is my life What I’ve lost What could have been Doesn’t shine in my light
I apologize with sincere To the ones I’ve done ill, The ones I’ve loved and the one’s not here.
I know words don’t pacify my crimes I just wanted you to know… … I’m still alive. And no, life has not passed me by.
And the twist of my existence is that I refuse to merely survive. I will thrive, just not in the ways I thought were right.
But most days I just thank God that I was ever able…
…to see my face in the reflection of your eyes.
