Collateral damage

Collateral damage

A Poem by anartao

A buzzing that builds overhead, a flash from out the sky

A hole where once a building stood, its occupants nearby

Twisted as they fell in shaded alabaster tones

The crimson mud

of dust and blood

that coats the flesh and bones

A symbol of the mindset that see’s those around a foe

As legitimate destruction in attempts to tag a toe

Innocence no issue when in close proximity

These rules of war

and twisted law

leave shattered bodies as debris

Collateral damage, the term we use, to sanitise execution

The glove that covers bloodied hands from the innocents’ persecution

Killers hiding proudly behind the letter of the law

It’s worth the cost

of civilians lost

when you tally up the score

Yet when that bloodied shoe is placed upon the other foot

These rules that they proclaim grow slick and don’t seem to stay put

When its American lives that are placed within the sights

Even soldiers and co,

a legitimate foe,

it’s all about terror, and all about rights

Is it our freedoms that create the hate that they’re quick to promote ?

Or is it freedom unattainable, and a boot upon the throat ?

Creating the conditions to give the fringe a welcome ear

The land of the “free”

preaching hypocrisy

and then playing the victim of fear
