The noble myths of war

The noble myths of war

A Poem by anartao

Forget the noble myths you’re told of the reasons behind war,

they’re honeyed words to sweeten what the common man abhors

Freedom and democracy, whilst catchwords from above,

disguise the stalking vulture behind the rhetoric of the dove

The real reason the drumbeat sounds and the sabres rattle loud

is that there’s fortunes to be made from every bloodied shroud

The tools of war make amounts obscene for the companies that gather

like beasts around a carcass as they fill pockets open slather

Not to mention contracts to rebuild what’s been destroyed,

or the private armies hired to protect those who’re employed,

or the markets that are opened, or the resources fast removed,

the billions made from conflict is a fact constantly proved

And when the politicians who sent others off to war

are hired upon retirement through a corporate revolving door

by the very companies that made such profits from the slaughter

the noble myths we’re told we find, when tested, don’t hold water

When has foreign occupation ever made a people free ?

Name a recent war that’s helped promote democracy ?

War is just a racket, as General Smedley Butler said,

The rich keep getting richer whilst the poor just end up dead
