The new Gods

The new Gods

A Poem by anartao

From crucifixes to credit cards, from Crusades to free market demands
The new gods have arrived, and like the old have blood stained hands
Wired deities of technology side by side with gods of greed
The messages have changed, and yet the common folk still bleed
Flocks of sheep with golden wool and empty vacant eyes
Glowing screens and plastic debt just altars in disguise
Kneeling down before a Lord to sate a souls deep thirst
Outside answers for inner questions seem to raise naught but the worst
Using lead and dollars to convert the heathen mind
The bending of your knees the measure of how your faiths defined
The Spaniards in South America, the US in Iraq
Distance on a calendar is all they have apart
Economic gods whose wrath see’s nations torn asunder
Gilded shrines to profit gods whose gospels built on plunder
Fanatics at the helm of every fattened western nest,
Bringing more into the fold, to worship and invest
The mother soon forgotten in the quest for yet more gold
Prisoners of extremism in the lands of those who’re sold
