Eddie Gilbert

Eddie Gilbert

A Poem by anartao
"

Eddie was an amazingly talented fast bowler who once bowled Donald Bradman out for a duck.Eddie was also an aboriginal, and has been forgotten from the sporting annals of this white washed country.

"

A tale of this sporting nation

entailing sorting based on station
Another of this countries hidden facts

A black who proudly wore the whites,

a fact that loudly aimed the sights
at him by whites who could not wear a black

Letters of permission sent

to simply leave the mission meant
that equalities a pipe dream from the start

What sort of tale can begin

when thoughts prevail on tone of skin
It’s from here that any reason soon departs

Sent Bradman quacking from the pitch,

not lacking skill with stitches six,
yet memory is such a fickle thing

A hope of treatment on prowess,

yet bowling feats meant nil I guess
when colour based amnesia’s all it brings

I hope one day these kids that grow

will change the scope, forbid the show
of a single colours march in any land

Stop the rise of blinkered vision,

and halt this cultural collision,
and laud the actions, not the colour of a hand
