Strings

He sat behind a curtain

All I could see for now was a picture

But I knew he was there

I had always dreamt of him

You were my image of angels and all things good

I gave the only currency I had those days: my time, my youth

And it became our show

My feet tapped in anticipation for the script we had envisioned

I watched the hearts painted in our eyes, I saw us dance

It was you, I became you

The images of my dreams, I lived

As naive as I was I swallowed every string of our puppetry

And with the push too far I was suffocating

I became clogged

I poked my tonsils to regurgitate all that I had become in your image

And out they rained

I picked up everything of our past and made a necklace of it

And whenever the inadequacy of not living up to your dream haunted me,

I would pull tighter and tighter

Until I exploded strings
