Chapter 19A Chapter by Amy SkyeWill confronts Kit about his feelings. Kit watched as Cress left, shutting the door behind her. How he wished he could take back everything he said. The feeling in his stomach made him nauseous. He walked over to the couch and threw himself down in frustration. Will sauntered over, his arms crossed. For a long moment, no one said anything. Kit sat there in his discontent thinking of all the things he could have said differently. “What is going on with you?” Will asked finally, “I’ve never seen you so unsettled and agitated.” With a sigh Kit threw his head back onto the couch. “I don’t know man.” He said, “I am trying to keep my head clear, but it’s so damn hard.” Will walked over and sat down beside him. “I shouldn’t have said those things to her. She probably hates me.” “Yeah, she probably does.” Will joked. “Look, I understand that you think Cress is your only hope at getting Adalee back, but you can’t put all of that on her shoulders. That’s not fair to her.” Kit leaned forward rubbing his face in his hands. “I know man.” Kit said, “But I just keep thinking that maybe we found her for a reason.” “Yeah, maybe we did, but I’m starting to think its not for the reason you think it is.” Will said sternly. “Like she said, it’s never been tested whether or not she can actually die, or if she can, whether she would come back or not. Anifa may be full of mad scientists, but they aren’t miracle workers.” Will’s tone shifted, “We saw Adie die, Kit. They can’t just bring someone back from the dead.” “We don’t know that.” Kit responded, agitated. “It’s been five years man. Don’t you think it’s time to move on?” Will asked, “I thought I had,” he replied, “but then we found Cress and,” he paused, unable to finish the thought blossoming inside his head. “It brought up some feelings you haven’t felt in a while?” Will questioned. Kit looked to him, nodding. “I see the way you look at her, but Kit, she isn’t Adie.” “I know that,” Kit shook his head, and with a smile on his lips he continued, “Adie was fun, she always knew how to make me laugh.” He smiled, thinking back to the two of them getting into trouble back at Forthold when they were young. He shook off the thought, it was too painful to remember the good times. “But?” Will egged him on. “But,” he continued, “Cress is different. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone quite like her.” He thought about her bravery, when without hesitation, she jumped back into the blaring jeep to save the two of them. He laughed a little to himself thinking back to her bright idea to use the linked cuffs to take out that Anifa guard. “She’s strong,” he said aloud, “We don’t even know a fraction of what she went through inside Anifa, and yet,” he paused for a moment, “she’s still got a good heart.” He stopped, shaking off this feeling, a feeling he didn’t know how to embrace again. “And, in saying that, we still don’t know much about her. We don’t know everything. She could be hiding things from us.” Will shook his head and sank into the couch, his arms crossed. “You’re hopeless.” He said closing his eyes, “I’ll wait for the day when you finally realize, you want more out of life then a tragic love story and an unfulfillable vendetta.” Kit, let the words hit him like a slap in the face as he sat there swallowing his pride. He knew that one day he would have to let go of Adalee. But until he knew if she was really dead, he couldn’t allow himself to let her memory fade from his mind, regardless of his developing feelings for Cress. As long as he could swallow the feeling in his stomach every time he was close to her, he would be okay. He wouldn’t let it overtake him. Besides, he thought to himself, it’s not as if she feels the same. Just then, Kit noticed two shadows pass over the front windows of the house. Quickly getting up, he peered through the curtains slightly. Cress and Marshall stood beyond, seemingly…laughing? Kit’s stomach turned at the thought of these two actually getting along. He stiffened as Marshall’s hand gently brushed Cress’ hair from her face. Anger and jealousy pulsating through him, there was no pushing this feeling down, his fist tightened and he threw the curtain in frustration, unable to continue watching. Just as he stepped away from the front window, Cress walked in. Kit blinked at the gleam from the setting sun bouncing off her golden brown hair through the open door. Their eyes met, just as she pushed the door tightly closed. But with a shake of her head, Cress looked away. Kit’s stomach sank, as she wandered down the hall into one of the bedrooms, quickly shutting the door behind her not saying a word.
