Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain

A Poem by Amy Cowan
"

A little bit of my feelings to do with my illness and struggles!

"

Growing pains they say, nothing to worry about

As they slide my file back into the cabinet

To gather dust until the next time
I brave a visit to ask the same questions.

Chronic pain is pain lasting longer than 12 weeks.
I chuckle quietly ,12 weeks, try 4 years

Try the rollercoaster of emotions, wondering why me

Why can’t I just be normal

We all long for little pain, to not be sick
But you never truly understand chronic pain

Until you find yourself drowning in the emotions
And medications it brings with it.

You’ll never understand being the weird one

The one that never understands, that gets extra support

Feeling isolated in the feelings you are drowning in
Trying desperately to reach out for help

But there is never a hand to catch you
Because nobody else understands
And you’re alone and you think you always will be
And reality is I still am!

Pain does have an isolating component; there isn't any blood, deep gashes, or twisted limbs for others to see. Even doctors who specialize in pain conditions are not completely a safe zone to speak freely.
It is becoming more public tho... I saw Jennifer Anniston in CAKE, it helps a bit to know someone can relate.

Be well...

I really want to watch cake! Thanks
Amy, I hope this poem is not a reality poem about yourself, if it is I will write you in private. Is the pain associated with your playing of instruments? sounds like it is you or someone close. I have been through something similar and have found a way forward, it never truly goes away but there are techniques that alleviate and condition the brain to cope. It may mean big life changes but people in chronic pain will do anything to bring the levels down and lead some sort of happy life.

If the poem is about you I read it as a cry for help.

I've never had it but I feel for you. To have to go through it must be torturous. I know there are people that kill themselves over it because they may not be able to afford the meds. I can only wish you the best and hope that one day you can be free of it.
