Only Our Shadows Will FollowA Poem by Amy SelenaI sit here alone with your pen in my hand You’re ten miles away, but I still feel your arm around me
Ink seeps through my paper like water in sand
While you dream if we could ever be
Meet me on the corner of South Broadway
Three weeks is too long without your warmth
You’re quite the ninja I must say
The sound of your name makes my pulse soar
You treat me with care like I just might break
And though I’m not sure why,
I stumble for more
Your laughter is as soft as the breaths you take
Grab my hand and we’ll run away
Where only our shadows will follow
We race through the horizon as my legs give way
You sit by my side as our breathing becomes shallow
The skyline turns a shade of purple
As the sun sets above our heads
I hope you can’t hear my heart flutter
It’s easier done than said
Play me a song in this grassy field
And I’ll watch you fingers dance across the strings
Your velvet voice is my shield
Against any sign of guilt still lingering
The clouds of your breath pump through the night air
As it melts the wall of tension and keeps us warm
I still don’t know why you care
But this feeling just keeps me wanting more.
