Nothing But Darkness

Nothing But Darkness

A Poem by Nichole Cosgrove

Walking through the darkness
With nowhere to go
I look all around me
And find I feel alone
The darkness is thick
To thick to breathe
A solid wall
Seemingly impenetrable
So solid
So hard to see through
That not only can I not see
But not even my instincts
Can feel the glaring eyes
So hard to move
So hard to breathe
So hard to even think
Slowly suffocating
Slowly drowning
Not knowing the eyes
Are what's causing these feelings
Of hopelessness
Of despair
So much criticism
When all I wanted was hope
So many imperfections
When all I wanted was joy
So many bad moments
Of pain
Of fear
Of no belief in hope
When all I wanted
Was love
Instead all I received was
Nothing but darkness
How many times must promises be broken
Before they are kept?
How many wishes must be made
Before they can come true?
Swallowed by fear and doubt
They never can
Shine their light through the darkness
To give me hope once more
To show me life
How long must I dream
And have them shattered
before they may become reality
Rather than fantasy
How can I fight
These heavy arms
To lift them high
So I may fly?
Another dream shot down
How may I open my heart
So it may enjoy
All the precious moments of life
Instead of it being shut behind
Stone and steel walls
With the key thrown away
Through it all
All my wishing
Dreaming
Hoping
Still I'm surounded
Being suffocated
Being drowned by the simple
Yet fearsome
Nothing but darkness
