My Mother

My Mother

A Poem by Nichole Cosgrove

You carried me for nine months
And loved me unconditionally
You brought me into this world
And still loved me unconditionally
When I fell, you picked me up
When I cried over my first scraped knee
You wiped away my tears
And cleaned me up
Obliged when I asked for 'a kiss to make it better'
And held my hand for eighteen years
You've given me your support, strength, shoulder to lean on
You've given me food, shelter, and a place to stay warm
Even though I've always felt warm
Knowing that everything I've done or will do
You still love me unconditionally
Over the years, we've had our fights
Over the years, we've had our disagreements and arguments
And still you've loved me unconditionally
Though I know I've let you down on occasion
And not made the best of decisions
You've still been there to hold my hand
You've given me sympathy and a shoulder to cry on
When needed
You've been stern and unrelenting
So I may see your point of view
Even when at I didn't at first
You loved me unconditionally
Finally, now, I do
I see your point of view
Being at a crossroad in my life
Getting ready to leave and choose my own path
Now the time has come for you to let me spread my wings
Though you still see me as your little girl
I will always be your little girl
Even being gone physically
Even though I'm leaving home
I'll always be with you in spirit and heart
I'll always be with you
And you'll always be with me
Cause even after everything we've been through together
And everything we'll face together in the future
You are and always will be
My Mother
I love you
