Caught off Guard

Caught off Guard

A Poem by Nichole Cosgrove

Caught off guard
By the night
When you stepped into the firelight
I knew you were there
Though I don't know how
I turned and saw you standing there
A silhouette that stood out
From those I knew
I was caught off guard
By the firelight that danced over you
Who were you
Standing there in the night
To make me freeze with hand in mid-air?
I had been brushing my hair
There by the fire
When I turned and saw you
A silent shadow let by fire
Who are you
To make me feel these emotions
A ball of tangled nerves in the stomach
A fisted pressure in the chest
As everything seems to focus on you
Caught off guard
A rare thing indeed
To catch me in that way
But you did it
Just by being there
For a mere few moments
Caught off guard
I watched you as you walked away
And saw with fascination
My hands lightly trembling
There was definitely soemthing different about you
That caught me off guard
Brushing my hair once more by firelight
I pondered where this path with you
Would lead
Will it lead to heatbreak adn sorrow
Or joy and a long life together?
These are the things I wondered
Even as I slept
Waiting for the next day
To be
Caught off guard once more
