Cool Sunset

Cool Sunset

A Poem by Nichole Cosgrove

I stand on the dock
And watch the sun set beyond the bridge
Beyond the buildings and the horizon
The cool wind brushes and plays with my hair
Just as you once did
And occasionally still do
Whenever I can see you
A cool sunset brings me dreams
As the last ray disappears
And the stars wink to life
I see your eyes
And wish upon a star
To see tiy in my dreams tonight
And hope you'll see me in yours
There are times
When I watch a cool sunset
That it almost seems as if you're there with me
And you've wrapped your arms around me
I lay my head back on your shoulder
I feel a whisper of your lips brush my cheek
As you watch the cool sunset with me
Then as the sunset fades away
So do you
And I want to weep
Even as the stars come to life
And make me think of you once more
But it's still not enough
When it comes time to sleep
I pray for sleep to come quickly
So I may dream of you
And feel your arms wrap around me once more
To feel you brush a kiss across my shoulder
Just to cuddle
Just to feel you there
Just to spend a night cuddling
No more, no less
Just to feel your warmth
That makes me feel safe
This is what a cool susnet brings for me
Hope for you to be in my dreams
Cool Sunset

Heart-rending, sweetly sad. It seems like she's talking to her lover. I haven't really observed a sunset in a reflective way as the poet does. Maybe she had often done that to be able to tell the similarity between a lover's touch and a cool sunset. It makes me wonder if the lover left for good and what happened. Indeed, good memories, even if they remain just like that can become storehouses for poetry in the making.

'Then as the sunset fades away
So do you
And I want to weep'

Maybe this is the reason why the poem is called "Cool Sunset". The lover is like the sunset, it fades when the day is over and this what truly hurts.

Such is a woman's perspective. If a man has to put such feelings into words, what metaphor would he use? Can you use "Cool Sunset" to describe a woman? Your poem makes me think of many creative things....
