The truth behind valentine’s day

A Story by Amy

Did you know that there are three St Valentine’s and that the first Valentine’s card was send in 1415.

Who was St Valentine?

St Valentine was a catholic bishop who, was been executed by Emperor Claudius in AD 420.

The story is that Claudius had decided that married men made poor soldiers, so he banned marriage from his empire.

Valentine didn’t agree and would secretly many young men that came to him.

Claudius was less than happy about this when he found out, and had Valentine stoned and beheaded.

There’s a romantic twist to the story in that while Valentine was imprisoned, he fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer.

Before he was taken to his death, he signed a farewell message to her, “From your Valentine.” The phrase has been used on his day ever since.

Not one but three?

The Catholic Church recognizes three saints called Valentine " all were martyred on Feb 14!

Who send the first card?

The first true Valentine card was sent in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London at the time.

We are not amused by this card.

In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card.

Why send a card when you can wear a spoon?

In Wales, wooden love spoons were carvel and given as gifts on Feb 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favorite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, “You unlock my heart.”

New Romance in Hawaii:

On Feb 1, 1779 Captain James cook, the great English explorer and navigator, was murdered by natives of Hawaii during his third visit to the Pacific Island Group.

A lot of Flowers.

Over 9 million red roses are given in the UK and 90% of those are given by men. The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman Goddess of Love.

Valentine’s Day Facts.

We look at the meaning behind the color of roses and also all those strange superstitions, which surround meeting Mr. and Mrs. right.

Say it with Flowers.

Roses have long been the flower of choice for Valentine’s Day. They are closely linked to love, but beware, each color sends out it’s own message apparently, so choose wisely.

It makes people do the craziest things and when it comes to Love ………Well, I guess people will do almost anything in their guest to find Mr. Or Mrs. Right. May be some of these suggestions will help "

Ø  If you see a goldfinch on Valentine’s Day, you will marry a millionaire.

Ø  If you see a flock of doves on Valentine’s Day, you will have a happy, peaceful marriage.
