diagnostic obfuscation

diagnostic obfuscation

A Chapter by Lyn Anderson
"

doctors can be cold

"
The lines on my forehead
Need a vacation
From expert diagnostic
Obfuscation
Prescribing therapies
For inflammation
As if eosinophilic esophagitis
Is an explantion --
Now that cancer
Is no longer
Part of the equation
The fluid in your lungs
Requires no further
Investigation
I am not a specialist
I am only a fool,
But last time I checked,
Drowning
Is
Drowning
In a puddle
Or
pool

This write speaks to me at a more personal level. During my time in med school and in opds, we were specifically trained how to make the patient at ease and how specially to make them understand the difficult scientific terms. Being that I'm from a place where we have a lot of people coming to the hospital speaking different dialects, it used to burden me a lot in the start and I had difficulty maintaining my composure and empathy in one place. But I think as we settle in with our jobs, the empathy, while being there, kind of starts to disappear from the faces, although I do know many of my fellow docs who really lack empathy in every sense. Reading this from a patient's pov hits hard, esp your ending.

we can hardly ever understand all the jargon...

Well conveyed Lyn. Professionals need to ensure their explanations are easily understood. We don"t need blinding by science. Your final lines excellent.
