It isn't necessarily a measure of effort expended, rather, you have to feel it in order for it to work. Ever read a poem that was technically correct, but uninspiring? Why do you think that is? Probably because the writer didn't FEEL it when he or she wrote it.

Poetry's like music. It's gotta move you in some way or it fails. Even if it annoys the crap out of you it still works. Drifting off to watch the squirrels frolic in the yard while you're reading it, that's not good. I didn't drift off while reading this so I don't know what in the hell the squirrels are doing.

I definitely agree the most important aspect of poetry is making the reader feel- whether it is sharing the poets own emotions or providing the mechanism from which emotion can emerge.

'Thanks, yes. You got it. Exactly. I never get hung up on what readers see in my poems that I do not, because of course, we all read from our own personal place of bias. Did it get them? Did it bring back a memory, a shiver, a tear to their eye, did it make them angry, or sad, or happy?
