her smile

her smile

A Chapter by Lyn Anderson

her smile
frozen in time
on my fridge.

nothing will
bring her
back to me.

she will
never age
another day.

she was
happy
they said.

recounting
the moments
before she

hung herself
from her
favourite tree.

someone,
somewhere ...

will be haunted
forever by
your smile.

Is it morbid to think of it...even though you know you'd never do it? Just the wonder if you would be missed..how it would affect peoples lives...if it would give you the satisfaction you crave. maybe its just the mystery of me...something about being close to death a time or two...maybe thats what makes me think those morbid thoughts...

A poignant testimony to what must surely be, the most desperate sense of hopelessness and helplessness anyone could ever feel, and which is felt by so very many across and around the globe.. From personal experience, I know it is those left behind, who forever question whether there was anything they missed or might have done............ A truly moving and necessary poem in my book.... Thank you so much. I don't know if anything I say makes a difference, but I have to try.

Sad ending.
I first thought you had just parted your ways
Very sad when someone is so ow that they take their own lives

They there is at least one person on the planet that thinks of you before they close their eyes to sleep, and it's probably her smile that they see in their minds eye. this is beautiful Lyn.

Thank you so much. If one person pays attention, then maybe one less person will suffer this
Sometimes, living becomes too great a pain.
Lovely and touching.

Of course.
I wasn't justifying suicide; was merely expressing a common "cause."
Ok, I have to come clean and say that at first I thought the first stanza said in my fridge...which changes that up significantly...lol. The picture painted here is one that I ain't help to identify with as I am sure most can. Looking at the pictures of loved ones deceased is the only time that a sense of happiness, nostalgia and sadness mix in just the right proportions that allows for that last stanza to ring so true. Great writing, the abrupt lines bring it home in tone and feel. Loved this!!!

Thank you for reading and reviewing.
A devastating ending that wasn't expected. The family and friends are rarely able to come to terms with the fate of their loved one by their own hand, and often remain haunted. This short poem catches that remarkably well.

Thank you so much.
It is a tornado to the soul, wreaking havoc and destruction...things may be rebuilt but are never the same...some things cannot even be rebuilt. The repercussions of losing someone to their own hand is far reaching...I don't even think they could imagine how much their absence devastates. It is a decision born of such pain. I am so sorry for all that feel such emptiness and surrender. This hurts, KL, I can feel the shadow of your pain.

Very sad. I read once that if you're thinking of doing it you should just sleep on it and do it in the morning.
Because what difference does it make, it's just a day, but the difference is that whatever happened in that moment cools down by morning. It's like that, boils and boils and boils up, but then boils over. Repeat.

"haunted forever by your smile"... and haunted forever by this poem KL...

a smile can often mask what is inside, I find this to be unsettling and have since looked more to the eyes, as they often reveal what a smile does not... and even then it is sometimes not enough... makes you want to chop down that tree, to find the source of the pain and hopefully help by being with them, to understand..

Yes, I know. A smile can also mean they have made their choice.
