Her choice

Her choice

A Chapter by Lyn Anderson
"

I am sure I have written of this is some form before, but it's plaguing me

"
Her choice
haunts me
in my dream.
Unimagined
horror
abject cruelty
summoned in
the simple word
"Choose!"
No mother could?
Could she?
Sadly, the answer is yes,
and mothers do it every day.

Author's Note

Lyn Anderson
For me, the movie "Sophie's choice" is the ultimate in horror. Sadly, there are times
when mothers must choose, and worse, times when they do for their own selfish
reasons ... My heart breaks for the former, and burns with rage with the latter ...

I never saw the film but I understand it might be about choosing which of your children to save over another. That would be a mother's absolute nightmare. A few years ago I wrote about a similar situation. A car plunged into a river. The mother was driving, saved her two year old toddler, but didn't have time to return and save her young teenage son in the back of the car. It haunted me. Your excellent poem has brought all those feelings back.

Yes, it does. Anyone who has a heart.
Oh God, one of my old time favorite movies, the brutality of it all just left me speechless. Yes indeed, mothers' heedlessly make these choice without the pressure of the holocaust nipping at their sanity. I can't say more...
