collateral damage

collateral damage

A Chapter by Lyn Anderson
"

the repercussions of adult discord

"
Anger rises like an ugly monster,
crawling up my throat,
shooting vile word tentacles
at the ones I love.

Misdirected, the shrapnel
shreds tender hearts --
their tears are fallout;
collateral damage of our selfish war.

If only I can find
the right tools
to remove the rest of
you from inside me,

      I can bandage the wounds,
           and move on.

Unfortunately, all to often we tend to take our anger out on the ones we love.. It does end up a sort of collateral damage that makes the pain even worse. This is a raw, powerful, heart felt piece that I can relate to. nicely done.

reminds me of Langston Hughes' poem "Cross"---

the idea of trying to move from the anger to forgiveness...and just moving on...

Thank you so much.
I remember this stage well, those we fought for to survive the nastiness of a marriage, are the first to be maimed, I often wondered if I made it worse hanging in there so long.

You hang in hoping and yes, in the end, I think, but then again, you do your best.
I felt the pain in this piece. You penned this painful write in a superb way. Each verse getting softer and softer - as I read it. Almost as if the realization of dawning came. Just how I read it though. :)

You do suffering so very well. I don't visit as much (superrrr busy) but I'm always happy to read your works my friend. A certain wound I'd rather not bandage

Kind of you to stop by. And glad you liked this piece.
The hurt felt here is relatable, the monster created within us when we are fed pain is brutal at times.

Just reading that part alone makes me think of how children end up getting hurt the most when the parents use them as the weapons in a divorce.
