morphology

A Chapter by Lyn Anderson
"

I was lying in bed this morning, and wrote it in my head.

"
He liked her
morphology
or so he said
at the time -
her shape
her texture
her carefree
way of moving ...
Not exquisite
nor delicate
but her wings
were powerful
shimmering
he caught her
in a sticky web,
inserted his
proboscis
and began to
suck ...
when she
was near dry
he mounted her
on paper
and stuck pins
in her wings
and body.
If she tried
hard enough
she could flutter
just a little
but mostly
could just
do what
he asked
when he
wanted
her to.
One day,
since he
wasn't familiar
with her
etiology
she began
to slip away.
She did it
slowly, quietly
chipping away
at the glass
piece by piece
while he
wasn't looking
and she
stretched back
into her old
morphology -

He tried nets and wires
hooks and chains
syrup and honey sweet
but nothing but
nothing could fasten
her back down again.
