Chapter Fourteen: The Girl and The BrownieA Chapter by amdc101Chapter Fourteen The Girl and The Brownie Mabel rode back to Castor’s workshop with Glandias clinging to her shoulder. People were milling around the thin road, stopping to talk to one another. The women could be seen comparing goods, and the best stands, and children swapped treats eagerly. She kept sighing impatiently as the crowds blocked her path, making it impossible to get through on horseback. She kept whipping her head from side to side, nearly knocking Glandias to the ground with her strawberry-blonde mane. “Again!” Glandias grumble as he pulled himself back up onto he shoulder. “Calm down, what’s your impatience about?” He grunted as he stabilized himself on her shoulder once more. “If he shut himself up like you say, he’ll be there sooner or later. We can take our time!” He sounded quite indignant. Mabel looked to the left again, trying to find a clear path. “Oof,” Glandias shook his head when he was knocked down her arm again Now Mabel turned to look at him. “I know when he gets like this, the sooner we snap him out of it the better. And everybody needs to leave. It’s too dangerous to stay where the Lion Prince’s men could come marching in at any second.” Now she slid quickly off her horse, once again knocking Glandias unsteady, and he was too exasperated to pull himself up again; he just crawled into the safety of her pocket. Meanwhile Mabel walked up to one of the men she knew from the Taining Folk. She was desperately trying to get him to watch her gray mare. “Please!” she begged. “This is important! I need to get through the crowd. I can’t do it with him-” “Mabel I have something important to do too! I need to perform, and make some money. I can’t do that with a horse, can I?” From his space in the pocket, Glandias shook his head. Mabel had a kindly heart, but she knew how to get what she needed when she needed it. She glanced around before dragging him by his arm into a dark alley. The horse stayed in the middle of the crowd, picking up his feet and putting them down, like he wanted to walk but couldn’t. He snorted. “Look,” Mabel hissed. She had him pressed against the wall. “What if I told you this involved the prince. Our Prince. Getting him to safety. Then what would you say?” “Give me the horse,” he said hoarsely. © 2011 amdc101Author's Note
