Chapter Thirteen

The Lion Prince’s Men

The clouds hung low in the sky looking sad and forlorn, spreading that feeling throughout Boreal. Everything was a shade of gray, as if the men on horseback were riding through a black and white film.

Asher rode in the lead, and he was the first to approach the broken bride. The wood was splintered and snapped. The troll seemed to have found a new residence, but he had left his stench behind. Asher wrinkled his nose. Examining his hands, he obviously found them to perfect to do the labor themselves. He, quite literally, was not getting down off his high horse.

He turned to Leuf and Apoldo.

“What are you waiting for?” he hissed. “Get down there and fix it.”

They looked stunned. No one had put him in charge, and they were too cluless to fix it themselves.

Leuf spoke up.

“How? We don’t have wood to replace the splintered pieces.”

Apoldo spoke in a gravelly voice.

“And I ain’t gettin’ down in that stinkin’ muck. I got some pride.”

He puffed up his small chest and showed off what crooked, yellowing teeth he had left.

“That’s your problem, isn’t it? And as for your pride, Apoldo, you lost that when you stopped bathing. Now fix it!”

Grumbling, they climbed down into the muck-filled creek. Together they tried to lift the snapped halves out of the water, but they could only manage the larger one, and the smaller pieces remained on the ground.

“We can’t do this by ourselves. I vote Asher goes to tell the prince we need more men, and that he might have to postpone the attack,” a grin spread over Leuf’s face.

Something like fear flashed in Asher’s eyes.

“I will go and fetch Rojo and some others. The attack will happen on time.”

He sped towards the fortress, forcing his horse faster and faster until Leuf and Apoldo couldn’t see him any longer. They remained in the creek holding the bridge.

This wasn't my favorite chapter to write...but it had to be done so you could get a glimpse of what 'the other side' is planning.

I think I understand why it wasn't your favorite... :( Yes, I do like knowing what they are planning because it doesnt always mean that they will succeed. Very interesting chapter. I hope you write more soon! I haven't been on for a while so I am eager to read more to make up for the time! Good job and keep on writing!
