The Girl in My Head

The Girl in My Head

A Poem by Avocations of Amber

The Girl In My Head
by: A. McNally

A tortured soul's cry echoes,
Invading the recesses of my fragile mind
Like an infantry announcing the forgotten pains of war,
now exhumed from my youth,
And appearing to me in realms of uncharted dreamscapes

I see the girl with mahogany hair, playing in the sturdy branches of a birch tree's grip
The girl from the past like a spirit of time
now wading back through the blue jasper waters,
Over dimensions of cascading memories,
to visit with me in the here, in the now

The words of Poe ring out into the amethyst sky as she scribbles them into the air,
"Once upon a midnight dreary"....
Her testimony is told once more
Of the goldsmith's shackles that she bore for so long
Her songbird heart sends lullabies in hopeful reverie
As she longs for peace from the tyrant's toils

She pleads with me to take her, to help her, to try
I go, leading her on toward that peace
Guiding her hand through the brambles and thorns
Shining the light to direct her new path
Which takes her to a hollow mound
Laden with wild violet's plush and scarlet sunlight's graceful kiss
Until she rests again in satin slumber
While awaiting the return of her Father in the clouds
