"To a Child"

"To a Child"

A Poem by Amanda Reynolds

“To a Child”

I am afraid of summer

Because I once lied to you.

And as you grow older,

I am afraid that you will do it too.

Just a little lie to protect

Innocence and hope,

But leaves will inevitably

Fall, and I wish that I never lied-

So that you could see the beauty

Of it all.

interesting - lying to spare a little one from fear. is there really such a thing as a little white lie? all truth is revealed in due season. many tell their little ones that the dead are, "just sleeping".

Reading this, we must wonder about the nature of the lie. I doubt it will do any lasting damage, as little lies seldom do. But of course, mothers will always worry.

Thank you, the original nature of this lie was to protect a young one about the questions of death, .. read more
Initially, seems such a sad flock of words, Amanda. But telling what will come back another time is like magic, a wonderful present to look forward to. Plus, everything, everybody, needs a rest, a sleep.. a holiday. Explantions and the promise of next year's glory will make for magic whilst a child is too young to know the truth and nothing but.. Charming words.. smiling words by the finish.

I see this as more than just a parent to a child...i feel inklings of politicalness as well.
Will our young ones ever trust politicians again?
I poll my students and pretty much all of them feel no regard for politicians or politics at all for that matter.
I love how you went from summer and the lies to fall and the repercussions....the beauty that might not be real ever again.
You can see my avatar and the pic of my mother in Vermont in 1957 and tell how I feel about it all.
We didn't think of lying back then.
Love your poem.
