A Beautiful Insult

A Beautiful Insult

A Story by Amanda Reynolds
"

A short short story about a a beautiful insult about my car and friendship.

"

I picked my friend up the other day and she told me that my car looked like "A mouse that has been through some s**t". It’s a little black 19-year-old Scion xa stick shift with about 160,000 miles on it, so of course it’s been through some s**t. It’s been through brakes, tires, belts and a clutch. It’s been through love, joy, heartbreak, ordinary days and devastating losses. It has a duck taped driver side window, a gas latch that does not close, and banged up license plates that dare red light cameras to read them, and a semi-functioning window that my friend once howled at with laughter while I struggled to pull it up during the rain. As I dropped off my friend, she pointed to her 5th floor window and said, “That is where I watch for "The mouse that’s been through some s**t" to come and pick me up, because I know it’s gonna be a great day.”

I so approve the raw, 'down to earth reality' of your story. Neither riches nor madness, but the normal have and be what's for real. Yes, reality with normality thrown in for good measure. Super fine finish about looking from your window... a down to earth view of how reality can give and keep on giving.
