Empty Ride

Empty Ride

A Poem by Amanda Reynolds

I gave her my bike,                                                                                                                                                                    That I no longer used,                                                                                                                                                                That I thought would make                                                                                                                                                        her happy,

Yet, she longed for a childhood,                                                                                                                                                  where she circled                                                                                                                                                                      The streets with                                                                                                                                                                      Challenges and laughter,

And now has no one to ride with.

This saddens me. A generous offer, given with the best of intentions, fails to help one who really needs it. Though I'm old and falling apart, my childhood memories are most precious. I might break a bone, but I'd ride with her. Highly effective writing, my friend.

I don't really speak with my best friend from childhood. We've done a lot for each other over the years but, we've grown apart. I don't see it as an empty relationship though, those friendships taught us how to make deeper connections and become better friends with our surroundings as we age. As long as it was a good ride, it is never an empty ride.

thank you for your comment and wisdom
I like this because it shows how we can assume things that aren't necessarily true.
I think the first verse could be shortened, but I don't fool with other people's poems.

Nicely done. 100/100

Bicycles are symbolic of childhood, most of us have had one and the fact that you give yours away is perhaps a little piece of you too, which is the real gift, one of inestimable value.

sounds like some training wheels might be helpful. very well written and much enjoyed despite the stark sadness. we wish we could go back but time has moved on. the circling created a sense of longing. well done.

There's such a sadness in your poem, seems maybe all the friends have gone, left the area - or passed.
Your brevity suggests such an aching loneliness, Amanda. Such fine writing.

Thank you so much for your review, even though some things in life are sad, it helps me to write it .. read more
Things don't make us happy, people do.
I tried for so many years to convince my mom that accumulating things was not important
to me...friends were.
Life is quite empty without the laughter of others.
I love this poem...You wrote a female version of me as the main character.
