Teacher Reflection

I stay here and help you go there…

And after 17 years, in the same place,

I stay, and I watch you go…

And you are running around in the U.S. Open,

And playing guitar to open a sports game,

And speaking on open mikes,

And raising your kids,

And working in a hospital,

And completing internships,

And, and And and And and And and again…

And the smiles when I see you,

Lets me know it was all worth it.

Gee
Must be so rewarding, better than nannying whining bricklayers and carpenters who moan about everything and anything as they earn £1500+ per week...tis a hard life. eh !

Love this
I take it you are a teacher
A guess ?
I had a favourite teacher in fifth and sixth grade primary
Mrs Dickinson
She was about 60 plus and must of had a soft spot for me dunno why
Now In my Facebook reunion school site they all say they hated her !
Dunno why. She was the best !

I have taught for 32 years and this poem really hits home...I also had a lay teacher at Holy Spirit grade school in the Bronx who wrote me postcards until she died. This was after I moved to Illinois.
She was tough on me in second grade; I thought she hated me...then she kept writing me after I moved away. I am still grateful for all I learned from her.
And one of my students from 7 years ago actually became a nurse and was my main nurse in Jan. when I had my triple bypass.
Thanks for this poem,
j.

Such a rewarding career. You pave the way for the future of your students. I remember well, many of my teachers with fondness. Very well conveyed Amanda.

Ah, Amanda!
Perfectly said, and ain't it the truth! And it gets better every year... Or used to, I wonder about the future with all the cultural trash distracting you from the real job of teaching them skills and how to think for themselves. I still have contact with my babies from 1973, through 2011, when I retired. I would still be there, if the government had not violated my ethics.

After all of the bad publicity schools get, it is nice to hear one teacher expressing the gratification she gets from her work.

Thank you, and I love the word "gratification" you used, as I also see my experience as a gift...
