Breaking and EnteringA Story by Amanda PabonA story told complete in 2nd person (you) narration that delves deep into a relationship that's so wrong but feels so right. It’s your first theft. She says that look on your face
is priceless. She doubles over and clutches her stomach, laughing at you. She
calls you cute. She touches your
cheek and says that the face you’re making is what’s funny. You raise your
eyebrows at her and she takes your hands in hers. She tells you not to argue
with her. That it’s all good fun. She apologizes. She says your pout is
adorable. She puts her finger on your lips. You grab her finger
and release it. You turn away from her. But you can’t resist when she pleads
with you. She grabs you by the shoulders and makes you face her. She pinches your cheeks. You shove her away. You tell
her you’re not a toy. She grabs your arms tightly like you’ll run off. She
crashes her lips with yours. You give in to her mouth. Why were you angry with her? Wait, she’s doing something
different with her tongue. You try to imitate what she’s doing. She laughs in between
the kiss. She tells you that she doesn’t know how she ended up with a softy
like you. You both realize you’re supposed to be breaking into a
store. She reaches in her jacket for a ski mask and caresses your hair before
she puts it on you. Your heart feels like it’ll explode. You wonder why you’re
doing this, why you’re here, and why she has the cutest laugh. She says that
she’s mean to you because she likes you. You roll your eyes at her. She starts fumbling with a
lock. Her body shakes and jerks a bit while she does it. You look at her butt
and remember why you’re here. You imagine her soft hands all over you, her sweet
voice that is only evident when you two are intimate. She snaps her fingers in front of your face and motions
for you to get moving. You sneak behind her into the store as if crouching a
little bit won’t trip security cameras. Your heart beats faster. You notice her
long dark hair underneath her hat. You want to run your hands through it when
she lays next to you and smiles so warm that you wonder if she’s even the same
person. You’re not even thinking anymore. Everything is instinct. Everything is
deliciously dangerous. Everything is her. You don’t know what comes over you and you grab her
butt. She turns around and lifts her mask so her mouth is visible. You lick
your lips. She smiles and tells you that this is a side of you that she likes. You
toss your mask on the floor. You don’t think. You just do. You grab her close
and kiss her long and hard. She grabs a fistful of your hair. You tell her you
love her. She takes off her mask completely and her eyes are widened with
shock. You wait for her reply. She just stares at you. You stare at her. She clears her throat and grabs a flashlight from her
back pocket. She ventures over to steal some shirts and purses. She stuffs them
in a duffel bag. You stand there waiting. She doesn’t look you in the eye. She
doesn’t talk. She holds up a pink silky top in her hands. When she
finally speaks, she asks you if you would wear something like this. You nod
your head yes. She stuffs it in her bag and walks out without saying anything
else. You run after her. After you exit the store, you notice that she’s nowhere
to be found. Damn, she runs fast. Deafening police sirens cause you to cover
your ears. Okay, don’t panic. Where can you hide, in close proximity? Across the street you see the bright lights of a Ben and
Jerry’s. Well, you are kind of hungry. But, it’s late, you’re sweaty and out of
breath. Not to mention you’re wearing all black. Not to mention, you live in
Hicksville, Kansas, and you’re not white. They’ll automatically assume you’re a
delinquent. Okay so Ben and Jerry’s is out of the question. You wonder where
she is. She would have found a really well-thought out spot to hide. Maybe she would
have called up some friends and they’d pick her up. You hear the police sirens
coming closer, becoming louder. Alright, now it’s time for you to panic. You
run across the street and you feel your face very cold. Your mask. You left it
on the ground. S**t. If she were here, she’d tell you that you were an amateur.
Okay, no big deal, you’ll just run and get it real quick. You find the mask on the floor, but an alarm starts
ringing. S**t, she must have disabled it temporarily thinking you’d both be in
and out. Okay, now you’re in deep s**t. You run out the back of the store and
see a McDonald’s down the street. At least, McDonald’s is open late. They’d let
any old whack-a-doo come in right? You run to the McDonald’s. You run in just
in time. You might as well order something while you’re here Outside of the McDonald’s window you see multiple police
cars zooming by. You’re safe. You sigh with relief. You see a pretty girl in
the booth across the venue. She kind of looks like her. You’re in too deep. Not
every white girl is her. She looks straight ahead and pulls her lip with her
finger. Your girl only does that when she’s super nervous or super out of it.
What are you saying? By the events of tonight, she’s definitely not your girl.
The girl looks in your direction and squints. Her eyes widen and she turns away
quickly. You don’t know what urges you to get up, but you do. You walk towards her and you sort of expect romantic
music to play as you do so. But this isn’t like any of the movies. Your reality
is probably battle music playing as you walk towards her. She still has her
head turned away from you. You clear your throat. She ignores it. “Alex.” You imagine that you say this tough, but what
you hear sounds like a frightened child. She finally looks at you. She gulps. This is where the
romantic music gets happier or the battle music gets louder. It’s the exciting
moments. It’s the climax of the battle. She looks around her. She looks like a
lost puppy “Do I know you?” she says. Your heart breaks into a
million pieces. What is she doing? Why is she doing this? You laugh it off. “It’s me, Aria?” You say. Hoping that Alex just has
amnesia temporarily. “Aria? I don’t know an Aria.” She laughs uncomfortably.
She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. She does this when she lies. You’ve
seen it millions of times. “Excuse me? I think you’re mistaken. This is probably
not the same Alex you’re looking for.” A rough voice calls from your right. You
flinch at the strange man’s voice. You turn to look at him. He’s handsome, you
guess. He has a really defined jawline, golden hair, and bright blue eyes. Who
the hell was this guy? You feel a hand grasp your arm tightly. You look to see
Alex holding your arm. She looks at you with warning. “Sweetie, I’ll settle this. Maybe the girl is out of it
and is seeing things. You know this town and its drug problem.” She says and
you don’t understand why she’d tell you this. Is the guy the drug addict? But
then, she directs you to talk in private. You realize that she wasn’t talking
to you. She would have never called you sweetie. “What the hell are you doing here?” Alex hisses. “I was hungry. It’s a free country.” You reply. Really
was it a crime to go to McDonald’s? “Okay, listen. After we broke into that place, I called
the only person I knew would be a decent alibi. My boyfriend. The one my
parents set me up with.” She quickly explains and looks over your shoulder. She
waves at the guy. “Wait, boyfriend. I thought you were lesbian. What the
f**k was I your little experiment?” You hiss. You’re disgusted and to think you
thought you were having trouble with your sexuality. “I’ll explain later. But no, you’re more than that.” She
grabs your hands and you pull away. “Please, he’s just my beard!” She jokes, “Wait, what is
it for lesbian girls?” “I don’t know and I don’t care.” You reply coldly. Her
devious smile fades off her face. “Just, can you promise me something?” She pleads. Her
puppy dog eyes don’t even do anything for you anymore. “Don’t tell Jason about what we do. I’m only with him so
my parents think I’m not out there being delinquent, which I am by the way.”
She winks at you. You scoff. “Better yet, I should just turn you in for tonight.” You
bluff. Her eyes become slits. She looks hateful. “Don’t be a b***h. Cause if you do, you’ll be caught
too.” She warns. “Prison would be a lot better than the bullshit you put
me through.” You mutter. “Listen, I’ll call you tonight. Please, I’ll explain
everything. You mean a lot to me. We just can’t you know. Isn’t it sexier in
secret?” She shimmies at the last comment. “Just answer me this. Do you love him?” You ask, testing
the waters. “Aria, don’t.” She pleads. You turn around to see her
date looking at his watch. He gives you a fake smile. “Okay, fine. Do you love me?” You try. “Aria” She says. “Just please, so I can sleep better tonight. For
closure, answer.” You plead. “I don’t know” She looks down. “Goodbye, Alex.” “Aria, wait!” She grabs your hand. You release her
grasp. At least you know. You turn around and see her puppy dog eyes again. It
won’t work. She sighs and returns to her date. You’re angry but you can’t seem to hate her. You wonder
if she uses her sweet voice with Jason all the time. You wonder if you’d love
her if she acted like that around you. You wonder what her parents are like and
if they’d like you. But you can’t because you know what it would be like. She laughs with him and feeds him French fries. She
looks back at you staring at her and she mouths, “I’m sorry.” You can’t forgive
her. You just walk away. It’s your first theft. She says that look on your face is priceless. She doubles over and clutches her stomach, laughing at you. She calls you cute. You look back at her a final time, she’s looking at you waiting for your response. She looks eager. You shake your head no. She mouths, “Please” You take your phone out and text her back, “Only because I don’t want to go to jail. After that, we shouldn’t talk anymore. Jason would get jealous.
