Begin with The End in Mind

Begin with The End in Mind

A Poem by Amanda Buscemi

begin with the end in mind...

(but that is filled with such sorrow)

instead, begin as though

childhood’s return

   (so tragically unreturnable)

is close at hand

small f i n g e r t i p s  are always reaching

  for the moment of clarity,

the shift to adulthood.

but fingertips beware!

   for behind the veil

   lies a heavy burden…

   (you can never bear it)

giants pretend to forget…

and survive with an inconceivably small

but dense reminder

just under the surface

others, oh those fortunate others;

are able to hold the heavy reality

draped in holiness and white..

and they do it with a smile

but us…

those of us unable to carry

a small and dense reminder

us…

the ones to whom smiles do not easily come

what of us?

but to face the tragedy of the end in mind.
