The Pressure to Be Perfect

Pressure to be perfect,

To never make mistakes,

Have to always pretend,

Can't ever take a break.

 

Must always be flawless,

Good at every little thing,

Can't ever mess up at all,

No matter what life may bring.

 

Must be perfectly beautiful,

Really, perfectly smart,

Very, perfectly skinny,

And have a perfect heart.

 

But perfect is boring,

You can't have fun,

It's a waste of time,

That can't ever be undone.

 

I'll still strive to be perfect,

Expectations require me to,

Won't ever achieve it though,

It's impossible to do...

Love that you end with the truth about being perfect, that it is impossible. I've driven myself insane with trying to be perfect. I may not have regained my sanity, but I have stopped striving to be perfect. I achieved this by not allowing what others thought of me to bother me. What I discovered was that I put all the pressure on myself, not others. Great poem, lots of reflection.

Thank you (: and yes, I believe that there isn't a single person on earth who can admit to never at all trying to be perfect.. But I think that the closest to perfect you can be, is when you get to that place when you're happy with yourself and who you are, when you finally stop trying to change to please others, or changing to be like others because you think that they're perfect.. Or closer to it anyways. I think everyone just needs to learn to be content with themselves, that's as perfect as we can get(:

A Game in life
We often must play
The Quest of perfect
To obtain without delay

A Futile struggle
Though oftentimes won
Defeated at others
obsessive is all you become

Filled with the Stress
Of everyday life
Is part of the battle
a War Raging Strife

Absolutely perfect! (the writing that is) No one in this world can be perfect and I never understood why people try to be, but then again... I find myself doing that same thing... trying to be perfect in every person's eye. It is impossible to achieve, still everyone does it. People (including me) need to embrace who they are and not strive to be what others think they should be. Well done with this piece :) Thank you for sharing!

With so many "flawless" images of people in the media and more, thoughts of perfection can simply overwhelm the heart and mind... Your words show a heart longing to be good... trying to do everything right... but knowing that yes, it is an impossible task that only creates fake people... all surface and no substance. Oh, I hope if you're feeling this that you find a sweet balance so you can enjoy your life to the fullest!

Awww, thanks so much Craig (: I think I'll just have to learn to be content with being myself, and keep on reminding myself that most of the celebrities, and people of that nature, that are in the news, are photoshopped and airbrushed so that they look perfect in a fake way.
