Sikh not!

A Poem by andrew mitchell

Sikh not
the headdress
but the sacred space
the turban confines.

reminds me of how i hate that in certain cultures, women are demeaned to be second class, subservient citizens...and seem to lose their freedom to be who they are.

This poem has a great message delivered in a few choice and measured words. The chosen example is great.

Your succinct message brings to mind how people can be distracted by anything outward that automatically clicks into place with some preconceived notion of theirs, already categorizing a person before even speaking to him/her! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Well done Andrew. Yes, let's try to get beyond what people are wearing and get to know what they are thinking. The turban is no different than a crucifix or the headgear worn in Arabia.
There was a huge outcry years ago when Sikhs wanted to wear the turban while in the RCMP, but then I suppose people were aghast at the way we wore our hair in the 60's.
The Sikhs won the right to wear the turban in the RCMP as long as it was an approved colour.
